Hope & Heroes Met Event

Once again, the pediatric hematology and oncology community gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, continuing our collaboration with Met Access Programs. More than thirty current and former patients, their families, healthcare workers, and medical students came together for an afternoon of exploration, art-making, and connection.

The workshop began with a round of introductions, where several patients shared how art had been a meaningful part of their treatment journey—transforming hospital visits into something they could look forward to.

We were honored to welcome artist and Qi Gong instructor Kayla Butera, who led the group in a grounding winter Qi Gong warm-up. She focused on elements associated with winter—the kidneys, the color black, the taste of salt, and the element of water—guiding participants through gentle movements and reflections on the changing seasons and the beginning of Black History Month.

From there, the group set off to explore the museum, taking the elevator up to the European painting and sculpture galleries. After taking in the sights, we gathered in a gallery dedicated entirely to depictions of artists’ studios—a setting that sparked rich conversation. Nitza asked the group if they felt represented in the museum’s collection and what it might mean to depict an art studio in a hospital setting.

Our focus then turned to Untitled (Studio) by Kerry James Marshall—a vibrant, intricately-detailed painting bursting with color and life. Guided by the Hope & Heroes team and the museum’s dedicated volunteers, participants experimented with water-soluble pencils and graphite on paper and board, drawing inspiration from the textures, forms, and details that spoke to them. As they shared their work and creative process, a lively discussion unfolded.

On the way back to the studio, we meandered through the Greek & Roman wing, taking in more of the museum’s wonders before settling in for the final phase of our workshop. Back at the educational studio, participants were encouraged to introduce water into their artwork, exploring how oil pastels and water interact to create a striking “resist” effect. We reflected on the theme of resistance—not only as a technique in art but also as a concept embedded in the stories we tell through our work.

To close, Kayla shared insights on our transition into the Year of the Snake, a time that calls for adaptability in moments of change and challenge. As the workshop ended, the room was filled with a sense of reflection, creativity, and shared experience—a reminder of the power of art to bring people together in unexpected and profound ways.

Hope & Heroes @ the Met is a seasonal event, and our Spring 2025 gathering will be held on April 6, 2025 from 2-4pm. This event is free with registration, with tickets available on a first-come-first-served basis. You may register now by following this link. Hope to see you there!
