2007 Annua Report

Hope & Heros - Children's Cancer Fund
Quick Facts
  • Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children - more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
  • Childhood cancer is not single disease, but rather many different types that fall into 12 major categories. Common adult cancers are extremely rare in children, yet many cancers are almost exclusively found in children.
  • Childhood cancers are cancers that primarily affect children, teens and young adults. When cancer strikes children and young adults, it affects them differently than it would an adult.
  • Attempts to detect childhood cancers at an earlier stage, when the disease would react more favorably to treatment, have largely failed. Young patients often have a more advanced stage of cancer when first diagnosed.

Other Ways to Help

A diagnosis of pediatric cancer is truly one of life’s most heartbreaking scenarios. Hope & Heroes and the team of talented doctors, nurses, specialized practitioners and administrative staff work diligently to provide the most compassionate care available to children and their families moving through the cancer experience.

What can you do?
Our advice to anyone interested in helping in our cause is to first decide the level at which you would like to participate. Our organization’s mission and purpose is to provide financial assistance to the Herbert Irving Child & Adolescent Oncology Center at Columbia University Medical Center; our focus is on fundraising and creating awareness for pediatric cancer. The following list explains a number of areas of participation:

 Donate.
You can donate yearly, participate in or sponsor our events or join the Legacy of Hope as a monthly donor. Click here.

Participate in one of our signature Hope & Heroes fundraisers.

Participate in one of our fundraising Community Events.

Community events are held by third parties, benefiting Hope & Heroes (for example…)

  • Sienna’s ParTee Golf Outing in September.
  • Bring a ski team to the FCS Race for Kids held every January in Stowe, Vermont.

Create and run your own fundraiser.
Like our Community events listed above, Hope & Heroes is often the beneficiary of family, patient, and donor-created events. We look to the community to raise money and awareness on our behalf in order to reach out to larger network of concerned individuals.  Some ideas:

  • Organize a Dance-A-Thon at a university. Use the THON at Penn State as inspiration.
  • Plan and host a comedy night
  • Have a bake sale, tag sale, lemonade stand
  • Plan and host a family fun day at your local park
  • Plan and host a sports event/competition
  • Have access to business leaders? Host a breakfast information series benefiting Hope & Heroes
  • Have access to fashion leaders? Host a luncheon and fashion show benefiting Hope & Heroes

Join the Silver Lining Society; our young professional group ages 21-35.
This energetic and committed group runs several signature events yearly and is looking for enthusiastic committee members to enlarge their presence on the New York City charitable scene. Visit www.silverliningsociety.org.

Introduce Hope & Heroes to foundations and people of influence.
One of the most famous mantras of fundraising is:  people give to people. A personal connection is a powerful one. Hope & Heroes looks for those individuals interested in introducing our charitable cause to those individuals with influence in foundations, major corporations and wealth managers.

Become a “charity to business” connector and introduce our cause to your organization.
The majority of businesses in the US have a charitable component, either in the form of a community foundation, employee giving or group giving during the holiday season.  Businesses take recommendations from their employees – consider nominating Hope & Heroes to your employer.

Become a community connector and introduce our cause to local schools and universities.
Charitable work starts at home and…in the schools. Many primary, elementary, college and universities run fundraisers and raise awareness for charities that they themselves choose. Help us to gain access to these groups by recommending Hope & Heroes. We provide credit for community service.

Host a cultivation event - a research luncheon or evening cocktail reception in your home
Introduce Hope & Heroes and our physicians and scientists to interested individuals in your community.

For business owners - become a Corporate Sponsor.
Align yourself with a passionate cause that needs partners in raising funds for clinical care and research.

Connect us to College Internship Programs.
Our Center for Survivor Wellness places pediatric cancer survivors in internships at CBS Radio and Major League Soccer. We are looking to expand our array of offerings. Consider adding our young adults to your organization’s roster of interns.

Support our Corporate Sponsors.

  • Every year in April/May, Burger King runs a cause marketing campaign called Spring for Fries benefiting H&H throughout the tri state area. To date, Burger King has donated nearly $500,000 to pediatric cancer. This campaign is typically used as a team building experience with incentive prizes and contests.
  • Support Hyundai. The Hyundai Hope on Wheels program comes yearly to benefit pediatric cancer research at Hope & Heroes.

Create a Personal Fundraising or Tribute Page.
Using our Personal Fundraising pages and Tribute Pages you can raise money in honor of a special someone or event in your life. Highlight your birthday, your wedding, your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah or pay tribute to someone in your life affected by pediatric cancer.

Support Hope & Heroes in September – childhood cancer awareness month.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The objective is to spotlight childhood cancer and survivorship issues.  Honor our survivors by donating to our Center for Survivor Wellness.

Requests from our Nursing Staff for our youngest of patients
We have a few simple requests that need ongoing refilling to keep our little ones moving through treatment – collect them at the holidays, in honor of a birthday, or part of a community service.

  • Candy. For when patients get their ports washed out
    • Gummy Bears, Swedish Fish, Tootsie Roll Pops, Lifesavers
  • Band-Aids. Choosing fun band-aids distracts patients when taking blood
    • Barbie, Sponge Bob, Spiderman, Dora the Explorer, Hello Kitty.
  • Treasure Box. Small gifts to help children through difficult procedures
    • Mattel Matchbox cars, plastic jewelry, dinosaur figures, action figurines.
