Quick Facts
- Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children - more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
- Childhood cancer is not single disease, but rather many different types that fall into 12 major categories. Common adult cancers are extremely rare in children, yet many cancers are almost exclusively found in children.
- Childhood cancers are cancers that primarily affect children, teens and young adults. When cancer strikes children and young adults, it affects them differently than it would an adult.
- Attempts to detect childhood cancers at an earlier stage, when the disease would react more favorably to treatment, have largely failed. Young patients often have a more advanced stage of cancer when first diagnosed.

Gala Event
Hope & Heroes raises almost half of its yearly income for children with cancer through events, including an annual fundraising dinner.

2009 Honoree Jeff Kurtz flanked by wife Sharon and Dr. Michael Weiner
The dinner began in 2002 in honor and celebration of Katie Brown, a young cancer survivor. The dinner was organized by her parents Marianne and Michael Brown and was attended by her devoted family and friends. In 2006, the Brown’s and Hope & Heroes joined forces to launch a larger event in New York City.
The dinner has grown tremendously while retaining the warm and friendly family atmosphere of the early years. The charity has honored the Brown Family (2005), Hope & Heroes founder Michael Weiner, MD (2006), the Alfano Family Foundation (2007), Noel Wax, VP of CBS Sports (2008) and Kara Kelly, MD, Director of our Integrative Medicine program (2008).
The Eighth Annual Dinner was held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. We honored Jeff Kurtz, president of Kamson Corporation. Click here to view the invitation. |
